Bible Reading
Desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.
II Peter 2:2
Daily Bible reading is very important. God didn't inspire and preserve His Word for you just to read it once a week at church. He expects you to read and study it often. Study to shew thyself approved unto God... (II Tim. 2:15). When you read the Word regularly and seek to obey it, you will grow in the faith and be convicted of sin.
You will be able to discern truth from error and not just depend on your pastor's or some televangelests (private? II Pet. 1:20) interpretation of scripture. I'm not saying that your pastor will intentionally misinterpret Scripture, but they are human and will make mistakes. Also there are many false prophets and teachers gone out into the world... Beloved, believe not every sprit, but try the Spirits whether they are of God: Because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (I John 4:1) ...even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies... (II Pet. 2:1). You need to read the Word so that you will grow up into Christ, and not be carried off by every heretical doctrine that comes your way.
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. (Eph. 4:14, 15)
God's Word is the truth and it busts up every lie. Thy word is truth. John 17:17 Thy word is very pure, therefore thy servant loveth it. Psalm 119:140 "Yea, let God be true, BUT EVERY MAN A LIAR." (Romans 3:4)
If you are in the word, you will have a "sure word of prophecy"(II Pet 1:19) that will quickly expose false teachings and prophecies, not to mention cults and false religions.
Read so that you know that you're in the faith, except ye be reprobates (II Cor. 13:5)
Spiritual milk vs Spiritual meat Not everyone can handle/understand every scripture in the Bible. The scriptures are broken into two catigories, milk and meat. Milk is the basics of the Christian faith, and meat is the more indepth doctrines of the Word. You first have to know the milk before you can know the meat. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their sences exercised to discern both good and evil. (Heb 5:14) You should strive to learn more from the Word and to use what you have learned, then you will be able to understand God's word more fully. See also "Taught by the Holy Ghost" to learn how He helps you understand the Word. This is for the people who have been Christians many years, but have never "grown up:"
5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. | ||
