For unto us a child is born - but who is He?
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
We have all heard this sung around the holidays, as part of Handel's great oratorio "Messiah." But do we really take the time to meditate on it and realize what it is acutally saying? It is declaring that Almighty God will be born as a little baby!!
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
(a baby boy is going to be born, nothing unusual about this, yet).
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
(This baby is going to be a king, with much authority. He will be up high on the food chain, but still noting really unusual in the earthly sence. It is normal to have kings and rulers.)
and his name shall be called Wonderful
(He will be a good king and everyone will love him),
Counsellor
(He will be wise in giving advice, like Solomon),
The mighty God,
(Whoa, wait a minute. This says that a baby will be born, and that He will be God Almighty??? God will be born as a baby?),
The everlasting Father
(Why does Isaiah keep giving this baby titles that belong to God alone? Maybe, just maybe, this Baby is actually is God incarnate! He is one with the Father, for Jesus said "I and my Father are one" (Jn. 10:30)),
The Prince of Peace
(The Messiah is referred to as The Prince (capital P) and Psalm 85:8 says that God will speak peace unto His people.
This baby is God Almighty in the flesh, and the Messiah!!!
Why did God Almighty allow Himself to be born as a baby into this world that He created?
